Explore Anuradhapura

Your base for the Sacred City

Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s first great capital, and its stupas, monasteries and ancient tanks are still places of pilgrimage. DELMOND Lake sits on Lake Road, beside one of those tanks, about 4 km from Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

The sacred fig tree at the heart of Anuradhapura and a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from across Sri Lanka and beyond.

  2. Ruwanwelisaya

The great white stupa, best seen in the soft light of early morning or at dusk when pilgrims gather.

  3. Thuparamaya

Regarded as the first stupa built in Sri Lanka after the arrival of Buddhism, ringed by slender stone pillars.

  4. Abhayagiri Vihara

A vast former monastery complex with a towering brick stupa, moonstones and the Samadhi Buddha statue nearby.

  5. Jetavanaramaya

One of the tallest brick structures of the ancient world, rising above the trees of the Sacred City.

  6. Isurumuniya

A rock temple beside a lotus pond, known for its carvings, including the celebrated ‘Lovers’.

  7. Mihintale

The mountain where Buddhism is said to have been introduced to Sri Lanka, east of the city. Go early to climb before the heat.

Good to know

Is Lake Road a good area to stay in Anuradhapura?

Lake Road is in Anuradhapura’s New Town, beside Kumbichchankulama Tank. It is quieter than the busy centre, about 14 minutes’ walk from the New Town railway station, and around 4 km from Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, so the main sites are a short tuk-tuk ride away.

How do I get around the Sacred City?

Most guests visit the Sacred City by tuk-tuk, bicycle or car, because the sites are spread over a large area. Start early to avoid the midday heat, and wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees. Shoes come off at temples, so bring socks for hot stone.

Can I visit Mihintale from DELMOND Lake?

Yes. Mihintale lies east of Anuradhapura and is an easy trip from Lake Road by tuk-tuk or car. Go early in the morning to climb before the heat; our check-out window opens at 06:00, which suits an early start on your last day.
